Referral request script (text + in-person)
Referrals are warm leads. Warm leads close faster and complain less. This page gives you scripts that feel normal, plus one forwardable message your customer can send for you.
1) The referral moment (timing)
Ask right after the customer says they are happy. Not three weeks later.
Good moments:
- They said “this looks great”.
- They said “thank you”.
- They said “we’ll call you again”.
2) In-person script
“If you’re happy with how this turned out, do you have a friend or neighbor who might need help with this too? If so, feel free to share my number.”
Short and normal. That’s it.
3) Text script
“Thanks again for having us out. If you know anyone who needs help with [job], feel free to share my number. Happy to help.”
4) “Forward this” message
This makes referrals easy because the customer does not have to write anything.
“Hey, I used [Business Name] for [job]. They were on time and explained options. You can call/text them here: [phone].”
5) Follow-up (one reminder)
If the customer said “yes”, you can send one calm reminder a few days later. Then stop.
“Quick reminder: if you know anyone who needs help with [job], feel free to share my number. Either way, thanks again.”
6) What not to do
- Do not pressure people.
- Do not make it awkward.
- Do not spam reminders.
- Do not promise rewards you cannot deliver.
Keep it normal. “Normal” wins long-term.
