GBP suspension prevention checklist
Google suspends profiles that break their rules. Recovery takes weeks and you lose leads during that time. This checklist shows you what triggers suspensions and how to avoid them.
Why suspensions happen
Google suspends profiles when their systems detect rule violations. Sometimes it is a real violation. Sometimes it is a false positive. Either way, you lose visibility until it gets fixed.
Most suspensions are preventable if you follow safe editing practices and avoid common triggers.
Common suspension triggers
These actions cause most suspensions:
- Keyword stuffing the business name (e.g., "Joe Plumbing Emergency Repair Phoenix")
- Fake reviews or buying reviews
- Multiple profiles for one business (one per city)
- Wrong business category (picking categories you do not offer)
- Fake address or virtual office (PO Box, UPS Store, coworking space you do not use)
- Changing everything at once (name, address, phone, category all in one day)
- Spammy photos (watermarks, phone numbers, copied images)
- Service area violations (listing areas you do not serve)
Official rules: Represent your business on Google
Business name violations (most common)
This is the number one suspension trigger. Your business name must be your real legal name or DBA. Nothing else.
Safe:
- "ABC Plumbing"
- "ABC Plumbing LLC"
- "ABC Plumbing & Heating" (if that is your registered name)
Unsafe (will get suspended):
- "ABC Plumbing Phoenix"
- "ABC Plumbing | Emergency Service"
- "ABC Plumbing - Best in Phoenix"
- "ABC Plumbing (602) 555-1234"
If your competitor stuffs their name and ranks higher, do not copy them. Report them. They will get suspended eventually.
Review violations
Google catches fake reviews faster than you think. Their systems look for patterns: same IP addresses, same writing style, reviews posted in bursts, reviews from accounts with no other activity.
What triggers suspensions:
- Paying for reviews
- Offering discounts or incentives for reviews
- Writing reviews yourself from fake accounts
- Asking employees or friends to leave reviews
- Review gating (only asking happy customers)
- Using review generation services that create fake accounts
Safe review practices:
- Ask every customer (not just happy ones)
- Send a simple review link after the job
- Do not offer anything in exchange
- Let customers write what they want

Wrong category suspensions
If you pick a category you do not actually offer, Google will suspend you. This happens when businesses try to rank in multiple industries with one profile.
Examples that cause suspensions:
- A plumber selecting "Electrician" to get more leads
- An HVAC company selecting "Plumber" because they do some pipe work
- A handyman selecting "General Contractor" without a license
Pick categories that match what you actually do. If you offer multiple services, use additional categories (up to 10 total).

Address and location violations
Your address must be real and staffed during business hours. Google checks.
What causes suspensions:
- PO Box or UPS Store mailbox
- Virtual office you do not actually staff
- Coworking space where you only visit occasionally
- Residential address if you claim to have a storefront
- Fake address in a city you want to rank in
Safe options:
- Your real business address (if customers visit)
- Your home address (if you work from home and do not see customers)
- Service area settings (hide your address if customers do not visit)
Multiple location violations
You can only have one Google Business Profile per physical location. If you serve multiple cities from one address, use service areas.
What causes suspensions:
- Creating one profile per city (e.g., "ABC Plumbing Phoenix", "ABC Plumbing Scottsdale")
- Creating profiles for fake offices or PO Boxes in other cities
- Claiming your home address and a virtual office in the same city
Safe approach:
- One profile for your real location
- Service areas set to all cities you serve
- If you open a second real office, create a second profile (but only if it is staffed)

Photo violations
Google removes spammy photos and suspends repeat offenders.
What causes suspensions:
- Photos with watermarks or phone numbers overlaid
- Stock photos that do not show your business
- Copied photos from other businesses
- Low-quality or blurry images
- Photos with text overlays (promo graphics)
- Photos showing illegal activity
Safe photo practices:
- Upload real photos of your work
- Use clear, well-lit images
- Show your team, your truck, your jobs
- No text, no watermarks, no phone numbers

Safe editing practices
Google watches for suspicious activity. If you change too much too fast, their systems flag your profile.
Do:
- Change one thing at a time
- Wait 48 hours between major edits
- Update your website first, then your GBP
- Keep your info consistent across all platforms
Do not:
- Change your name, address, phone, and category all in one day
- Edit from multiple devices or IP addresses in a short time
- Let multiple people edit at the same time
- Use VPNs or proxies when editing
Agency and manager access risks
Giving access to the wrong people can cause suspensions. Some agencies use risky tactics without telling you.
Safe access practices:
- You own the profile (you are the "Owner")
- Agencies get "Manager" access only
- Remove access immediately when you switch agencies
- Check your profile weekly to catch unauthorized changes
Red flags:
- Agency asks to create a new profile for you
- Agency wants "Owner" access
- Agency stuffs your business name without asking
- Agency buys reviews or offers incentives
Warning signs (check monthly)
These signs mean your profile is at risk:
- Your profile disappears from search or Maps
- You get an email from Google about policy violations
- Your edits keep getting rejected
- You see a message that says "Suspended" in your dashboard
- Your reviews suddenly stop showing up
- You cannot edit your profile anymore
If you see any of these, stop making changes and check the Google Business Profile support forum for help.
Verification issues
Google requires verification before your profile shows up. Failed verification attempts can trigger suspensions.
Safe verification practices:
- Use your real business address
- Use a phone number you answer
- Use an email you check regularly
- Do not verify the same address multiple times with different names
- Wait 14 days before requesting a new postcard if the first one does not arrive
If verification fails 3 times, Google may suspend the profile automatically.
What to do if you get suspended
If your profile gets suspended, do not panic. Most suspensions are fixable.
Steps:
- Check your email for a suspension notice from Google
- Read the reason carefully
- Fix the issue (remove keyword stuffing, update address, etc.)
- Submit a reinstatement request through your GBP dashboard
- Wait 3-5 business days for Google to review
- If denied, post in the Google Business Profile Community for help
Do not create a new profile while suspended. That will make it worse.

Monthly prevention checklist
Spend 10 minutes each month checking your profile:
- Search for your business in Google and Maps (make sure it shows up)
- Check your business name (make sure no one added keywords)
- Check your address and phone (make sure they are correct)
- Check your categories (make sure they match what you offer)
- Check your photos (remove any that violate guidelines)
- Check for duplicate listings
- Check your reviews (report fake or spam reviews)
Catching issues early prevents suspensions.
Long-term compliance mindset
Think of your GBP like a storefront. You would not change your sign every week or put fake info on your door. Treat your profile the same way.
Principles:
- Be honest about what you offer
- Use your real name and address
- Earn reviews the right way
- Change things slowly and carefully
- Monitor your profile regularly
